Studying From Home: Personal Trainer

12-04-2018

Even though the vast majority of your work will be very hands on at the gym, a lot of the studying for your part-time course is actually done at home. Discovery Learning offers a great deal of help to aid students’ home study including instant messaging with instructors via email or phone, as well as the online portal which has everything you could possibly need such as mock exams and instructional manuals.

But you just need to remember as far back as school, that studying from home is not as easy as it sounds. Distractions are always going to crop up and there’s really not much that can be done. However, we’ve got a few tips and tricks that can keep you focused and get your coursework done:

Keep a clean work space:

Clutter on your desk leads to clutter in your head! Find a workstation that is big enough to hold all of your books, laptop, iPad, pencil case, glass of water, whatever you need. Whether that workstation is your desk or the floor or kitchen work-surface, make sure it works for you.

Minimise distractions:

Clutter on your desk is one thing but when you’re PlayStation is staring you in the eye, it’s difficult to say no, sometimes.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy so don’t feel like you have to start early and finish late with no breaks. You can use time management approaches such as the Pomodoro Technique – 25 minutes of work, 25 minutes of play, 25 minutes of work, 25 minutes of play – to keep yourself from getting overworked.

As helpful as it can be, music can actually be more distracting than you think. We recommend movie soundtracks or video game music as music without lyrics are proven to be more helpful in keeping focus

Change your scenery:

Studying from home doesn’t mean you have to study from home. Getting out of the house and changing your surroundings can have a big impact on your learning. A different environment can play a big part in learning and retaining new information. Coffee shops, parks, long train journeys, there are a number of options where you can take yourself. Our best suggestion: your local library. What better place to study than the big building with a lot of books.

Take practice exams:

The best way to see whether or not you are getting ready for your exams is to test yourself with previous exams! Discovery Learning actually has a great selection of learning resources available online and these include instruction manuals and also mock exam questions!
