Human behaviour is a complex phenomenon and often the product of an array of social, psychological, emotional and environmental factors, making it difficult to understand and a considerable challenge to change, for both clients and exercise and health professionals alike.
In order to help clients change their behaviour and adopt a healthy lifestyle, we need to have an understanding of the factors that influence their
behaviour. For example, if an individual believes that all healthy food is unpalatable, they are unlikely to adopt a healthy diet. However, if they try
examples of healthy foods that they enjoy and which challenge their belief, they are more likely to make healthier food choices. Similarly, if exercising in public wearing typical exercise clothing is incongruent with a client’s cultural norms, they are unlikely to join a gym. On the other hand, if the
client is given the opportunity to exercise in a more private environment and is able to wear clothing they are comfortable in, even if it is not traditional
exercise clothing, they are more likely to become physically active.
