Discovery Learning Certificate in Sports Nutrition
This unique short course will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to work with clients and sports clubs to improve their performance by applying the principles of sports nutrition. The course is based on 32 hours of learning which includes 20 hours of supported home study, followed by 8 hours attendance at a course tutorial and practical workshop day, and concludes with a supported case study. This course will make you a sought after sports nutrition specialist, complete with all the practical skills and knowledge to be able to impact performance during training and on competition day.
Course Content
The main energy systems, phosphagen, anaerobic and aerobic, Energy production and storage, Fuel and substrate utilisation, different approaches for the different sporting disciplines, Working with young people and children, Vitamins Minerals Antioxidants and Free Radical damage, Carbohydrate and the glycaemic index, calorific requirements for athletes as well as planning energy requirements and considering refuelling, Eating for competition and event days, planning for competition day, and addressing the key factors of immediate pre, during and post competition. Protein, essential amino acids and quality proteins, dangers of too much or too little protein, hydration de-hydration & sports drinks, Isotonic, Hypotonic, or Hypertonic sports drinks, weight control for athletes, metabolic calculations, calorific values of training regimes, nutrition and immunology.

Entry Requirements
Level 2 gym qualification, sports coaching qualification or equivalent coaching experience. Writing and numeracy skills are also required for presentation of course work.
Minimum age 16.
This course is for
Instructors wishing to specialise in working with sports people or sports clubs or to improve their own performance. This course will also be appropriate for instructors offering nutritional advice for improved training and performance in the gym or studio. This course does not qualify you to work with elite athletes.
Course Format
16 hours attendance at tutorials followed by completion of a case study.
