Insurance for Fitness Trainer and Personal Trainers

Discovery Learning Fitness Courses and Personal Trainer CertificatesFor newly qualified fitness professionals getting started can be a daunting prospect, and if you are thinking of working freelance then we recommend that the first thing you do is to invest in an appropriate professional insurance policy. For this to happen, it is almost certain that you have a recognized gym or fitness instructor qualification and we would also recommend registering on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). This is perhaps the most convenient and cost effective way of getting insurance for personal trainers and you will be in good company with most fitness professionals covered in this way. Below is an overview of the cover and you can click on the PDF attached below if you want more information. Level 2 Fitness Instructor insurance starts at £46, and £63 for Level 3 Personal Trainer insurance, but you should contact REPs for more information.

Fitness Trainer Insurance Requirement

All members of the Register at Levels 2 or 3 are required to hold adequate civil liability insurance which covers (your) legal liability for death, injury or illness to others and loss of, or damage to, third party property. Validation is confirmed at the time of first registration and then at every annual re-registration.

If you are in full-time employment your employer should countersign your registration or re-registration form confirming that you are fully insured under their policy. No further individual public liability insurance cover is required.

However, if you are self-employed, or undertake any work where you are not under direct contract with an employer (and therefore covered by their policy) you must either:
  • Provide a copy of the details of your current insurance cover, or,
  • Take the optional public liability insurance which is detailed in this leaflet, Including making full payment
The Register requires you to hold an annual liability policy with a minimum indemnity of £5,000,000. If the limit of indemnity applies in the aggregate, then the minimum requirement is £10,000,000.

The Register Insurance Scheme offers the option of public liability limit of either £5million or £10million, and this cover includes liability arising from advice provided and products liability. For more information download the following PDF REPs Insurance Description
