Top 10 Fitness Gifts for Christmas!

1. HEART RATE MONITOR
Whatever the sport a heart rate monitor can give you a greater insight into you cardiac performance, allowing you to push yourself to the limit and even map your fitness as your heart gets used to strenuous exercise.

2. KETTLEBELLS
These weights are similar to the more common dumbbells but focus mainly on building core strength, offering a great variety of exercises required to improve at many exercises and sports.

3. PEDOMETER
One of the best and under estimated ways to get fit is walking. Pedometers are an incredibly easy way of finding out exactly how many steps and miles you've clocked up in a day, allowing you to set weekly goals and targets to achieve.

4. SKIPPING ROPE
Not just for school girls. Skipping is an incredibly good way to improve personal fitness, with many boxers keen exponents of the exercise. More modern ropes will even count the amount of skips you perform, displaying it in the handle. What's more if you're pressed for time, skipping provides a quick, intense burst of exercise to get you panting in no time.

5. YOGA MAT
The amount of people taking part in yoga sessions has dramatically increased in recent years, with classes seemingly popping up everywhere. The only equipment you need is a mat, either a cheap one from a supermarket or a rather more luxury one like the one pictured. While not usually an aerobic activity, yoga does improve flexibility, muscle strength and provides a moment of calm in the hustle and bustle of modern life.

6. ROWING MACHINE

Although more expensive than the other gifts, rowing machines provide a full body workout for people of all ages. The exercise strengthens muscles in the arms legs and core areas as well as increasing aerobic fitness levels and burning calories. Owning a rowing machine also allows you to get a proper workout in the comfort of your own home, allowing you to row watching tv if you find exercising a bit of a chore.

7. EXERCISE BALL

The key benefit of using an exercise ball, also known as Swiss balls, lies in the balancing act of staying on top. By combining regular work out techniques with an exercise ball the core muscles - the abdominal and back muscles - are more heavily engaged, over time becoming stronger as your balance improves. Used for athletic training, as part of a general fitness routine or even to perform yoga and pilates exercises on, Swiss balls are one of the most versatile fitness items available.

8. MEDICINE BALL
Medicine balls have been in use for nearly 3000 years, their history extends all the way back to Persian wrestlers training with sand filled bladders. Thankfully since then they have improved somewhat and now a variety of different sized and weighted balls are available and used extensively for injury rehabilitation and strength training. Just like the exercise ball this bit of kit has multiple uses, from aerobic workouts to get you sweating to muscle strengthening and toning.

9. CYCLING JACKET
Other than a helmet, a high visibility jacket is the most important cycling accessory, allowing cars to notice you and keeping out the rain. Anyone who cycles to work everyday, will undoubtedly be aware of the great exercise getting on your bike can be, but it's vital to have the proper gear to change out of when you get to the office.

10. RESISTANCE BANDS
An incredibly cheap way to tone and build muscle is with resistance bands. Unlike cumbersome weights, they won't clutter up your home and there is much less danger of injury from dropping them. Another one of those fitness gifts that is incredibly adaptable to different situations, resistance bands can be used to focus on specific muscle groups, to mirror sporting manoeuvres and in conjunction with dumbbells.
