REPs Level 4 Obesity & Diabetes Management Course Eligibility:
- Level 3 Personal Trainer Qualification
- Level 3 Nutrition & Weight Management Qualification
- Level 3 equivalent Qualification in Psychology, Social or Behavioural Sciences
- Practicing Specialist Clinician such as Obesity Nurse or Dietician
Level 3 GP & Exercise Referral Qualification is also a pre requisite alongside any of the above for progression to level 4 REPs.
Level 4 Obesity & Diabetes Management Course Structure:
Our REPs Level 4 Obesity Management Qualification is a blended learning course, meaning that you do approximately 4 weeks home study followed by a 2 day tutorial. You will then complete a further 6-8 weeks home study and attend a further 2 days at one of our venues. Late bookings on this course can be accepted but you must first speak to an advisor to ensure that you are in a position to catch up on the home study component.

Aims of the course:
- Have a thorough understanding of the underpinning factors driving the obesity pandemic, including social, behavioural and physiological determinants of obesity
- Understand the linkages of obesity to disease and the development of the metabolic disruptions associated with excess adiposity
- Have the knowledge and information to set up a NICE compliant obesity management programme and the skills to lead one to one intensive interventions or group programmes.
- Know how to effectively assess a client: stage and progression of obesity, comorbidity, functionality, mobility, physical fitness, risk, psychological issues including preparedness for change, dietary assessment etc.
- Have expertise in designing weight reduction programmes for obese subjects involving physical activity, behaviour modification and nutritional advice
- Work with all BMI ranges of obese and diabetic clients to develop meaningful and realistic targets and goals and know how to review and adapt goals accordingly.
- Be able to develop safe and effective exercise programmes for obese clients with multiple comorbidities and in particular diabetes and metabolic syndrome
- Understand the risks associated with working with obese and diabetic clients in an exercise setting.
- Have an in-depth knowledge of the environmental, social and cultural aspects of population obesity sufficient to lead on aspects of policy design and strategy development.
- Outline the credible prevention and intervention strategies to combat obesity at a local and national level, and advise on the design and implementation of both obesity interventions and prevention programmes
- Understand professional working practices and best practice relating to health and safety within the field of weight management and obesity provision
- Understand the pathophysiology of both type one and type 2 diabetes and different exercise approaches for the management of each condition.
- Have a working knowledge of the drug therapies and their actions for obesity and the common comorbidities
- Understand the primary bariatric interventions and the pertinent pre and post surgical management issues
- Understand and recognise the main eating disorders: Anorexia nervosa, Bulimia nervosa and Binge eating syndrome. Know how to refer on. • Summarise the pharmacotherapy for obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
- Develop the skills and understanding to deliver successful behavioural change techniques leading to improved nutrition and increased physical activity, as well as creating opportunities for improvements in other lifestyle behaviours.
- Understand and demonstrate the techniques used in: Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Theory of Self Efficacy, Trans Theoretical Model, and the Health Belief Model.
The Level 4 Obesity & Diabetes Assessment Process:
Formative assessment (During the course)
This aspect is included to assist learning and does not form part of the final assessment, and as such will not influence final result. 1. Obesity and Diabetes management. Mock examination
Summative Assessment (End of course) 1. 40 Question multiple choice examination (70% pass mark required). Internally marked by WMC. 2. 3 open questions (up to 200 word response 70% pass mark required) internally marked by WMC. 3. Multi component case study based upon a real person with a ≥BMI30kg/m2 (70% pass mark required)
You are required to pass all three elements of the summative assessment. If you refer any component of the summative assessment you will need to arrange a resit or resubmission. Resits and resubmissions are charged at £50 (case study) and £25 for either MCE or Open Question paper, and these will need to be paid for prior to attendance or submission.
