The Health Related Exercise for Children (Children’s’ Exercise Course) is a useful qualification that provides you with the certificate required to deliver exercise sessions for children aged 5 to 16 years. This Children’s Fitness Course is ideal for people wishing to work with Children such as after school club leaders, youth workers and teachers. This Children’s Exercise Course enables individuals to build fitness programmes for children. Our course both offers the latest in innovative exercise programmes for children and brings fun to children’s exercise.
Health Related Exercise for Children (Children’s Fitness and Exercise) Course Content:
- Muscular and Skeletal system and muscle actions of the body cardio-respiratory system
- Components and principles of health and fitness and the benefits of exercise for children
- Concepts and components of fitness
- Warm-ups and cool-downs
- Psychological barriers for participation
- Dyspraxia
- Plan, teach and evaluate a safe and effective children's exercise programme
- Exercise appropriate for obese children and contra-indications (not appropriate) for obese children
- Conduct and evaluate health related exercise sessions
- Appropriate motivational techniques
- How to adapt sessions for children with special needs
Entry Requirements:
No prior qualifications are required though a reasonable level of fitness. Writing and numeracy skills are also required for presentation of course work. Minimum age 16

2 Days attendance and 40 hours of supported home study

This cutting edge course will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and deliver a first class effective children's weight management service by promoting sound nutrition and increasing physical activity through behaviour modification. You will also be equipped to advise managers, governors and decision makers in the wider community on policy, planning and the social and environmental causal factors behind childhood obesity; making you a highly sought after and effective professional.
Childhood Obesity and Nutrition Course Content:
The aetiology of obesity and the significant obesogenic forces in the micro/macro environments. What is driving childhood obesity and what changes are required to halt and reverse the year on year rise in childhood obesity? What are the special needs of overweight and obese children? What are the critical issues relating to exercise, activity, psychology, eating habits, peer pressures, environmental influences, parents, role models and issues of education, and socio economic circumstance? What are the keys to successful intervention in childhood obesity?
How can you make a positive impact on children individually and collectively, and what policies and strategies are appropriate? What does the evidence indicate in terms of programme design and efficacy? What are the strategies of prevention, and what are the wider social and environmental issues that need to be challenged. How can every one of us positively impact the obesogenic environment?
The Childhood Obesity and Nutrition Course Format: Unit 1 - Nutrition and Health - Self directed supported distance learning (approx 4-6 learning hrs) Unit 2 - Weight Management - Taught unit with compulsory attendance on two day training course
The Childhood Obesity and Nutrition Entry Requirements Level 2 qualification, coaching qualification or work related experience. Writing and numeracy skills are also required for presentation of course work. Minimum age is 18.

This course is designed for anyone working with young people, or working in a role that could impact the lives of children. Community health providers, school and practice nurses, fitness professionals, teachers or those involved in planning, design or policy formulation in areas impacting children. The course is also recommended for those who are planning to or are currently providing exercise tuition for children. This may include staff in leisure and fitness centres, after school clubs or people who want to help promote fitness to children. Namely, all people working with young people on healthy living or weight reduction initiatives.
Children’s Exercise and Obesity Instructor Certification & Qualifications CYQ Level 2 Qualification: Certificate in Instructing Health Related Exercise to Children. Weight Management Centre certificate in Safe Exercise for Overweight & Obese Children. Certificate in Childhood Obesity and 16 REPs CDP credits.
Progression routes
This Children’s Exercise and Obesity Instructor course has been developed in conjunction with Weight Management Centre and includes a specific section relating to exercise and Childhood Obesity, and you will also receive a Weight Management Centre certificate in Safe Exercise for Overweight & Obese Children. The Weight Management Centre is on the Department of Health List of Obesity Trainers www.domuk.org as complied by DOM (Dieticians in Obesity Management) and has recently been appointed to the Dept of Health Framework of Childhood Obesity Providers. We are also responsible for direct delivery of obesity services on behalf of a number of Primary Care Trusts for both Children and Adults and in this way we can keep abreast of the practical and logistical aspects of delivering obesity services.
